Read About the ‘Missing’ 1913 Liberty Head Nickel to be Featured on TLC’s Accidental Fortune

Collectors will be excited to hear that the famous 1913 Liberty Head Nickel owned by George Walton is going to be featured on television, appearing on The Learning Channel’s new series, Accidental Fortune.

The 5-cent coin was reported as ‘missing’ after the owner, George Walton, died in a car accident. The nickel was recovered from the crash and given to Walton’s sister as an heirloom, however, a misidentification of the coin led his sister to store this fortune in her closet for over forty years. In 2003, four of the five-known 1913 Liberty Head Nickels were featured at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money in Baltimore, which prompted Walton’s sister to attend the show with this unknown fortune in hand.

Examined by Paul Montgomery, Mark Borckardt, John Dannreuther and a group of Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) experts including David Hall, the coin was rightly identified as the fifth specimen of the five known 1913 Liberty Head Nickels. TLC’s new show, Accidental Fortune, will feature a segment on the resurfacing of this coin and the events that took place for it to happen.

Two of the men that were originally approached by Walton’s sister with the nickel, Paul Montgomery and Mark Borckardt, co-authored a detailed and extensive book on these coins that is published by Zyrus Press: Million Dollar Nickels. Visit our home page if you'd like more information on this exciting book!

Use Photography To Sell Your Coins!

As the use of the Internet and electronic visual media become a vital part of the coin industry, photographing coins has become an increasing concern with collectors and dealers. Due to the contrast, luster, color and tone of the various metals, it requires knowledge and skill to produce stunning and realistic coin photography.

In this second edition of Numismatic Photography, author Mark Goodman has fine-tuned the secrets to quality digital coin photography. Using a visually rich guidebook format, he addresses frequent problems coin photographers face, recommends improvements and provides specific tips and techniques to help capture the perfect photo.

The chapters are divided into two parts: Essentials and Advanced, allowing beginners to learn without being overwhelmed, while still providing more advanced photographers with the information needed to enhance and improve their skill sets.

Goodman’s structured and systematic approach is easy to apply, simple to learn, and doesn’t require an expensive camera or costly equipment.

Whether the coin being photographed is encapsulated or raw, deep mirror Proof or dark copper, Mint State or circulated, the skills and techniques outlined in this book allow even the beginning photographer to capture the true essence of each coin, with life-like brilliance, contrasting devices, sharp detail and perfect bands of luster.

“Coin photography is very different from other macrophotography disciplines and requires the development of a completely different set of skills and techniques.”

Mark Goodman is the founder of Coinimaging.com where he takes coin photos for collectors and commercial clients. His published articles on coin photography appear in Longacre’s Ledger and on his website. By trade he is a radiologist, spending hours in a dark room studying images and understanding how to be critical of them. This attention to detail fueled his obsession with image quality in coin photography.
